Public libraries or public library systems may apply for a construction grant for the purpose of site acquisition (purchase of land with an existing building), or for the construction, renovation, or rehabilitation of a library building. The grant can fund up to 50% of the cost of an eligible project. Routine maintenance is not fundable under the public library construction program.
Application materials for both the $14 million and $800,000 programs are available on the State Library’s website. They include the grant application and instructions, budget forms, an application checklist, a comprehensive list of Frequently Asked Questions, and information on the allocation of funds throughout the state.
Please note that local libraries must work with their public library system and submit their applications to the system before they will be reviewed by the State Library. The deadline for receipt of applications at MVLS is Wednesday, August 1. The MVLS Plan for Administration of State Aid for Library Construction is available on our website.
Questions about the construction grant program can be directed to Lois Gordon or Carol Clingan at MVLS.
