We recommend that libraries financially plan to replace computers on a 3-4 year schedule; we understand that some libraries find this financially difficult and often have only one staff computer. This program will help libraries make this critical purchase.
The workstations (micron 365s) purchased when we migrated to Polaris are at the end of their lives. Older equipment is harder to support and eventually reaches the point where replacement parts and patches to address security issues become difficult or impossible to do. It is time to replace your old staff computers.
Our program permits a library to replace one staff workstation. MVLS will pay for the computer with the library repaying MVLS in monthly payments over the course of the next two years interest free. The library can formally request participation in the program via a signed letter from the director or board president. Equipment will be ordered through the Joint Automation project group order (done quarterly) unless there is a reason for placing the order more quickly. The Joint Automation Project negotiates competitive pricing for pcs through group ordering; staff sets up the equipment and loading essential software and virus and malware protection. Those safeguards protect the entire network.
The SALS board approved a similar loan plan for SALS libraries needing to replace a staff computer.
