>Webinar – Writing a Library Behavior Code

>

Date: Thursday, November 18, 2010
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Place: Online
Cost: FREE

Libraries are more aware than ever before of who the sexual offenders are in their communities. What are the legal rights of the offenders, and the obligations of the library? What should the library do when someone is soliciting for charity, or selling services or products on library grounds? How much notice and appeals should be given to a library user, when asking him to leave for two hours? For six months?

During this webinar, we will:
•Review elements of enforceable patron conduct codes – (FEND off lawsuits!)
◦Free Speech (focus on behavior, not speech)
◦Equal enforcement
◦Notice of policy to library users
◦Due process (appeals)

In addition, information and guidance will be presented on:
•Handling solicitations or sales on library grounds
•The legal status of sex offenders in the library
•Due process – how much notice and appeals should you give?

At the end of this one-hour webinar, attendees will learn about:
•Elements of enforceable library behavior codes
•Sex offenders’ rights and responsibilities in the library
•Handling solicitation and harassment problems by library users

This webinar will be of interest to staff at both public and academic libraries.
