Workshop – How to Spot Fake News

Date: Thursday, May 04, 2017
Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Place: Schenectady County Public Library, McChesney Room
Presenter: Carol Anne Germain, University at Albany
Cost: Free

Call it fake news, misinformation, post-truth, or just plain lies. It’s a fact of our daily lives lately. Many of us have worked with people who are unaware of how to evaluate the information they receive given the current climate and the information overload that follows. Carol Anne Germain, Subject Librarian for Information Studies and Informatics at The University at Albany, will help us identify fake news, offer reliable information sources, and lead an interactive discussion of how to help our patrons when they don’t even know they need help.

At the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand the variety of and be able to identify fake news traits
  2. Be able to provide resources for reliable information
  3. Understand how to better approach patrons to make them aware of reliable information sources
  4. Receive a laminated guide to place on your computer.

Please register for this workshop at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PFHY9R8. Bring your laptops or devices for our interactive discussion.

This workshop is made possible due to a collaboration between the University at Albany, Mohawk Valley Library System, Southern Adirondack Library System, and Upper Hudson Library System
