Lesson

  • Activities
    • PLEASE NOTE: This kit can be used for almost any basic mathematical operation study. The cards and chips primarily lead towards addition, however as your student becomes more comfortable with addition, you can make simple alterations in order to continue using this format.
    • Each mat with spinners will provide you and your student with a very comfortable starting place to work on introducing addition. The spinners only go as high as 5, which mean the answers do not go any higher than 10.
    • The addition sign on the mats could easily be covered up with a piece of paper allowing you to change the operation to subtraction, multiplication, or division. Alternatively, you could have your student supply you with one of the leaf blanks (meaning you put the answer you want, spin one spinner and he/she supplies the other blank using subtraction)
    • Since there are 60 ladybugs, you and your student can use quantities much higher than the 10 limited by the mats. Additionally, the numbers can be paired to represent higher numbers for the answers.
    • Do not limit yourself to the kit. Once your student is comfortable with the ladybugs, use other objects you find around the house in order to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Little candies, crackers, or fruits can be particularly good at demonstrating the concepts because you can eat the results and that helps provide very real and memorable results.
