Shapes
Objectives
- Students will be able to recognize shapes and find them in varying
contexts.
- Students will use physical materials, pictures, and diagrams
to explain mathematical ideas and processes and to demonstrate
geometric concepts.
Kit Contents
- Books (in kit)
- Adler, David A. Shape Up! Fun with Triangles and Other Polygons
Lesson
- Introduction
- Define CIRCLE - a closed, curved line with all points equal
distant from the center.
- Define SQUARE - a closed figure with
four equal length sides and right (or equal) angles.
- Define
RECTANGLE - a closed figure with four sides and right (or equal)
angles
- Define TRIANGLE - a closed three-sided figure
- Define HEXAGON
- a closed six-sided figure
- Think of where we see shapes: pictures
on walls, tables, doors, cabinets, signs, books, etc. Many
things have
more than one shape
(chair with square seat and round wheels)
- Read: Adler,
David A. SHAPE UP!
- Program
- Hold up a plastic shape and have students practice saying
the name of each shape while pointing to it.
- Have student find
shape in a pile of plastic shapes when asked “Would
you hand me a square (rectangle, or circle, etc.)?”
- Have
student find something in the room that is given shape. (“Find
something in this room that is shaped like a rectangle”)
(a door)
- Scavenger hunt: find five objects containing each shape.
- Play
matching games with the shapes.
- Creative play - Using the plastic
shapes, see how many different shapes you can create. (Ex.
two squares make a rectangle,
six uniform triangles make a hexagon)
- Try to make pictures
using the tangrams (If the tangrams are popular, there are
stories at the library which include
illustrations
created with tangrams.
