Families Count

Size

Objectives

  • Students will explore size in terms of comparison with the concepts of bigger/smaller, taller/shorter, and more/less.
  • Define SIZE - Size includes length, height, and width (total volume) not just one component. It can best be thought of as the space filled.

Kit Contents

  • Red Program Folder
  • Books (in kit)
    • Hutchins, Pat Titch
  • Equipment (in kit)
    • Basic Fitting Board
    • 9 Shapes that fit in board
      • 3 Blue Squares
      • 3 Yellow Triangles
      • 3 Red Circles
    • 1 Inch Color Cubes
      • 80 in 8 Colors

Lesson

  • Activities
    • Using graduated blocks
      • Have students line up shapes according to height.
      • Have students compare heights between different shapes. (taller, shorter)
      • Ask your student if all the tallest ones are the same size. Height and size are not necessarily the same thing. Although the tallest square and the tallest triangle tower are the same height, the square one is still bigger.
    • Using counting cubes (good for comparing volume)
      • Each of the cubes is exactly the same size. Creations you build with them may be different sizes. The number of cubes used can be counted to determine total size of your creation.
      • Recognize that objects can be the same size even if they vary in height or width. Use counting cubes to demonstrate that the same numbers of cubes are used if something is 8 cubes tall by 2 cubes wide, it is the same size as size as 4 tall by 4 wide.
