Auriesville Shrine, Fonda/Fultonville, NY

Auriesville Shrine

Kateri Tekakwitha was born here in Auriesville in 1656. Martyr's shrine was begun in 1885 as a monument to these first saints of North America. Fr. Isaac Jogues and Rene Goupil were brought here in 1642. After their capture by the Mohawk Indians. Rene was killed and buried outside the village. Fr. Jogues was martyred on October 18, 1646. John LaLande was also killed. These three martyrs along with five other Jesuit missionaries martyred in Canada were canonized by the church in 1930. It has a unique coliseum shape.
