Fort Plain Free Library, Fort Plain, NY

Fort Plain Free Library

In 1885, Martha A. Bortle, preceptress of the Clinton Liberal Institute , organized a Women's Literary Society in Fort Plain. She wanted to establish a public library for the village. Donations of books were accepted and a home found for the library. The location of the library was changed through the years. In 1909, Mr. & Mrs. James H. Williams' children and Sadie J. Williams gave the present property to the Fort Plain Library Association. It was called the Williams Memorial Library then. It is now known as the Fort Plain Free Library.
