Fleet Bank, Johnstown, NY

Fleet Bank

While this building is the site of a bank today, this is where stood once the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was born here November 12, 1815 and it is here and in her father's law office next door that Elizabeth learned at a very early age of the injustices society bestowed on women. She devoted her whole life to seeking the right to vote for women to help correct those very injustices.

Her home was a two-story brick structure and one of the finer homes in Johnstown. It was destroyed when a horrible fire took down all of the buildings from Market to Perry Street in 1873. Luckily, artist E.L. Henry had captured the buildings in his painting "Main Street Johnstown".
