St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, NY

St. John's Episcopal Church

The very first church stood on Green Street on the site of the Drumm House. It was built by Sir William Johnson in 1760. Since the congregation quickly outgrew that structure, a second larger stone church was built on the current site. The entrance faced north and Sir William's remains were buried behind the altar.

When fire destroyed that building on November 11, 1826, the current beautiful church was designed and built. It was decided to move the entrance way to face east. That change put Sir William's remains outside of the edifice and a special marker now denotes his actual burial site for all to visit.
