Johnson Hall, Johnstown, NY

Johnstown - Sir William Johnson Hall

Sir William Johnson began the construction of his baronial estate in 1758. It became the center for all important events held in the valley. It was here that Sir William met with representatives of the Six Nations of the Iroquois.

He lived only 11 years in the home, dying at the young age of 59. His family held the property only a short time since his son remained loyal to the crown. He and his family were forced to flee to Canada where they began a new Johnstown.

The building is made of wood sixty feet long and forty feet wide and stands two stories high. It has two blockhouses nearby that were used for various business dealings as well as an office for the proprietor.
