St. George's Episcopal Church, Schenectady, NY

St. George's Episcopal Church

By 1695 Anglican services were being held at the site of St. George's Church where they are held to this day in the current structure completed in 1759. The original building was destroyed by fire in the mid 18th century. The present church was designed by Samuel Fuller, with most of the building costs paid by Sir William Johnson, although he seldom came to worship. In 1953, it was restored to the original Georgian style.

St. George's Church property on Ferry St. includes part of the site for the Queen's Fort. The church was used for barracks during the Revolutionary War. It is also said that the Presbyterians contributed to the building of St. George's with the understanding that they could use the church, but they must enter by the side door. The Episcopalians got to use the front door. There is also a graveyard behind the church.
