St. John The Evangelist Church
Audio Excerpts | Current Photo | Historic Picture

Interview with: Wayne Harvey
Interviewed by: Emily Carbone & Nancy Gifford on 5/22/01

Emily: Anything you know about St. John's Church?

Wayne: Only two things. It is made out of Medina sandstone, the red colored sandstone and it comes from Medina out in the western part of the state, somewhere between Rochester and Buffalo. The sandstone came down on barges on the Erie Canal.

The church has a greenhouse top also, but it got too hard to replace and they couldn't replace it with glass when they repaired it, so they used metal. There are more towers and turrets on that church than any other place around. The best towers and turrets around are on Union Street. A lady did a study and called it "Castles on Union Street". The difference between a tower and a turret is a turret starts at the top of the first floor and runs up. A tower starts at the ground level and runs all the way up.
