Speaker: Howard Luther Tatlock
Today is April 11,
2001, and this is Maggie and Katie with Mr. (Howard) Luther Tatlock
and we're going to talk about the Green Corners School. Can you tell
us a little about yourself and how you first came to this community,
Mr. Tatlock?
Tatlock: Well,
I was born in Ballston Center, if you know where that is. And then the
same year, my father moved to the West Glenville area. And then in 1920
he purchased the Tatlock farm, and that's where I grew up.
About the school:
Of course, we sort of had to start school then at seven years old. And
I think it was 1926 when I started, and I graduated from that in 1934.
Well, today, when you go to a school, you have a teacher for different,
each subject, right? Then, one teacher taught all the grades, and how
she ever did it, I don't know. You might say she was a unique person.
Subjects taught:
K.
Smith: What subjects did you study?
Tatlock: The subjects in them days, the first one we had in the
morning was
physiology - you know what that is?
M. & K. Smith:
No - No
Tatlock: I don't either! Well, anyway, it's mental.not mental,
physical health. Cleanliness and exercise and like that. We had, American
History, geography, spelling, English, math - mathematics, they called
it arithmetic back then.
