United States Post Office, Main Street, St. Johnsville, NY

United State Post Office

The St. Johnsville Office of the United State Postal Service is located on the site of the former Getman Hotel. The hotel was razed in 1937 to make way for the new federal facility. Under the auspices of the WPA, New Haven Connecticut artist Jirayr H. Zorthian was commissioned to paint a mural for the lobby. Created in three panels, the mural represents periods of development from the advent of white traders up to the Revolutionary War. The faces depicted in each character were said to have been drawn from the many photographs housed at the Reaney Library.
