number. Time Globe. Metal and lithographed paper. 86 h x 92 c. Circa 1881.
Made by the Juvet Time Globe Company. In 1876, Glens Falls watch maker, Louis Juvet exhibited a globe which revolved once every 24 hours at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The Globes were very popular, and Juvet had orders from all around the world for them. However, he lacked a factory. While there he met James Arkell, another exhibitor, who offered to build a factory for Juvet. The firm open for just six years may have made as many as 100 of these Globes, mostly smaller than the one seen here. |
