Surgical Kit. Mainly Silver-plated iron, wood and cotton. 12 x 6 x 3.
Circa 1862. English manufacture. This kit was issued to local doctor, A. J. Smith, who served in a local regiment of the New York State Volunteers during the Civil War. After the war, Dr. Smith gave it to one of his interns, Dr. Wessels. In the 1800s, most doctors would do many types of surgery now done by specialists. Notice the bone saws, knives, trephine, and probes in this set. Today, most of these tools are electric powered. |
