Diary of Thomas Lynch -- 43rd New York Volunteers. Paper, manuscript-diary.
11.4 x 15.9 cm. Dated 1864-65. Thomas Lynch was just 18 when he enlisted as a private in the 43rd New York Volunteers, a local regiment. The unit trained for about a year in Washington and then was sent to fight with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. A graduate of the Canajoharie Academy, Lynch was one of the few recruits who enlisted in early 1862 who survived the Civil War. He was an officer and the unit’s clerk when the war ended in 1865. |
