The Mohawk Valley at Canajoharie
317385. The Mohawk Valley at Canajoharie. Edward Gay (1837-1928). Oil on Canvas. 50.8 x 76.2 cm.  1876.

In the Spring of 1876, Edward Gay, an artist trained in Albany and living in Mount Vernon, New York, was commissioned by local resident Webster Wagner to paint a landscape of his hometown. During that trip, he was also commissioned by two other local residents to paint similar landscapes. This painting completed by December of 1876 was shown in a local bank that Christmas. The work was commissioned by a local lawyer who is seen hunting in the foreground. The tiles on the frame were also painted by Gay.
