Nelson Greene, a local historian and artist, wrote numerous books on the history of the Mohawk Valley and surrounding areas.

Fort Plain Nelliston History covers the period from 1580, when there were nine Mohawk Indian villages within four air miles of the Fort Plain - Nelliston area, through the Revolutionary War, the booming Erie Canal era, the days of the Clinton Liberal Institute, to 1948, the year of this book’s publication.
