The Clinton Liberal Institute, a co-educational  boarding school begun in Clinton, New York, under the auspices of the Universalist Church, relocated to Fort Plain in 1879. Accommodating students from the age of fourteen to twenty-four, it offered six different curricula ranging from one to four years of study.

Students came from out-of-state and foreign countries, as well as from the local area.  Simon Lake, inventor of the modern day submarine, graduated from the school. Grover Cleveland and Clara Barton also attended the Institute.
