Scenic Postcards of Historic Gloversville
Postcards, Unknown, Scenic Postcards of Historic Gloversville, c. 1900-1925, Colored postcards; 15 x 10 cm. each

These postcards are from the collection of Dr. R. Morris Palmer, who was the longtime Fulton County Historian, and depict buildings and street scenes from a bygone era in Gloversville. The four shown are: the Memorial Hall on North Main Street, also known as the Kasson Opera House. Built in 1880 by A. J. Kasson, a prosperous glove manufacturer, it was Gloversville's premier entertainment venue for fifty years, with many famous performers appearing on its stage. Still standing, it has been converted to office space and stores.; the railroad passenger station of the old FJ & G Railroad (Fonda, Johnstown, and Gloversville) on West Fulton Street. Established in 1870, the FJ & G ran until 1984. The Gothic design passenger station was constructed in 1888 and burned in 1969. The site is now a park and the railbed has been developed into a walking and bicycle trail.; the Nathan Littauer Hospital on Littauer Place was built between 1893 and 1894 with money donated by Lucius Littauer and named in honor of his father. The original structure was obsolete by the 1960's, and a new Nathan Littauer Hospital was build on East State Street and dedicated in 1968. The old Victorian building was demolished in the early 1970's to make way for an athletic field.; the Daniel Hays & Co. glove factory was a major leather business with a large work force and a bell that rolled for lunch and quitting time. Although the company ceased to exist, the vacant building remains standing on West Fulton Street, a remainder of the time when Gloversville was the glove center of the world.
