The Col. Sammons Post No. 242, Grand Army of the Republic in Gloversville was an organization of Union Army veterans who had served in upstate New York regiments during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. The post was named in honor of Col. Simeon Sammons (1811-1881) of Montgomery County, who raised the 115th Regiment of New York Volunteers, known as the "Iron Hearted Regiment". Recruited from Montgomery, Fulton, Saratoga and Hamilton Counties, the regiment fought gallantly in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida, in such battles as Harper's Ferry, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. This large commemorative volume contains brief narrative descriptions of each member's war service.
