A
CIR 2 Nancy Zimmerman Failing painting. 62.2 x 77.5 cm
This painting
is one of a pair depicting Nancy Zimmerman Failing and her husband, Henry
Nicholas Failing. The painting, which is oil on canvas, is of very generous
measure. Although this painting and its companion were probably
completed in the Mohawk Valley in the 1840's, attribution of the work
to a specific artist has proven difficult. Recent research indicates
that the artist Charles R. Palmer, who was active in Albany might have
produced the paintings in the late 1830's and early 1840's.
Both the Zimmerman and Failing families were very much a part of early
Mohawk Valley history. The library has an extensive genealogy and
local history collection and both of these names are prominent among the
resources. |
