In the Mohawk Valley
A CIR 1 Durand painting: "In the Mohawk Valley." 46.4 x 31.8 cm

In 1845, Asher B. Durand made a trip though the Mohawk Valley where he made sketches for several paintings including one of the Erie Canal, another of the Mohawk Valley, and two views of Trenton Falls.

This oil on canvas painting has all the subtle brushwork of Durand and evidence of the contrast between settler and wilderness typical of his work.  With gently rolling hills, rock-strewn stream, and trees depicted in summer green, the painting bears witness to the pastoral natural beauty of the Mohawk Valley.
