Conrad Weiser led a band of travel weary Palatines to found the first settlement in the Schoharie Valley in 1712. It is reported forty small rude huts of logs and earth, covered with bark and grass, formed Weiserdorf, now called Middleburgh. Subsequently there were six more Palatine settlements or dorfs northward along the Schoharie Creek. After the poorer Palatines in Weisersdorf developed disagreements with the wealthy Dutch settlers who arrive some years later, and their problems could not be resolved, many Palatines, including Weiser chose to resettle in Pennsylvania. All histories of the arrival of the first white men to occupy the Schoharie Valley tell the story of the hardships endured by Weiser and his band of Palatines, who viewed their new found land as the land of milk and honey. Come to the history room to read about the early settlement of Schoharie County.
