Watercolor on paper, framed under glass, H. Mills Abrams, 1953, 20.5 x
28 cm. This watercolor painting depicts the Lasell Hall, Main Street, Schoharie. The building was erected in 1795 by John Lawyer as a tavern. In 1805, the property was acquired by the Lasell family, whose heirs deeded the building to the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in 1913. The original trustees of the Schoharie Library were members of the D.A.R., and in 1916 the Library was started in one room on the second floor of the Hall. The Library expanded to fill much of the second floor and the impetus for moving the Library to its present location was the structural damage the weight of the books was doing to the building. The back of the painting is inscribed "Presented to the Schoharie Library January 10, 1953 Horace M. Abrams." |
