The Sharon Springs Free Library was
founded in January of 1910 through the interest and effort of Rev.
E.R. Armstrong, rector of the Sharon Springs Episcopal Church. He
was elected the first president of the Library Association. The other
four trustees were Mr. J.F. Freeman, principal of the Sharon Springs High
School, Mr. George U. Clausen, Dr. Herbert L. Odell, and Dr. Leland O.
White. At their first meeting, they adopted a constitution. The Board
of Regents of the State University granted the Library its provisional
charter on January 25, 1911.
On February 9, 1911, the board of
trustees extended an invitation to all ladies interested in the library.
Funds to operate the library came
from a variety of sources: dime socials, musical evenings other types
of social events, and donations from interested citizens. The state
provided some funding and in 1912 the Village voted to provide $500
in annual funds. In the 1920's the Town began contributing annual funds
to the library. In 1968, the library joined the Mohawk Valley Library System.
