Correctional Institutions
MVLS provides New York State grant-funded services to Summit Shock
Incarceration Correctional Facility, Hale Creek Alcohol and Substance
Abuse Correctional Treatment Center, and the Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady,
and Schoharie County Jails. Services include materials, programs,
and equipment to support educational, recreational, and self-improvement
goals.
Deposit Collections
Books for senior centers, nursing homes, hospitals, youth camps, day
care centers, community centers and member libraries are provided.
Disabled Persons
A text telephone (TTY) is available for borrowing. This device digitizes
sounds and will show text of a telephone conversation. A message can
be typed which is then converted to sound for a hearing person on
the other end.
"Learning Styles Toolkits" are provided
at the following member libraries: Amsterdam Free Library, Canajoharie
Library and Art Gallery, Gloversville Free Library, Margaret Reaney
Memorial Library in St. Johnsville, Schenectady County Public Library,
Middleburgh Library, Schoharie Free Library, and The Community Library
in Cobleskill. These are kits of interactive multi-sensory, adult
focused materials to help people learn reading, math, and life skills.
They are best used in a one-on-one tutoring situation.
Special cassette players, books-on-tape, and described
videos from the New York State
Talking Book and Braille Library are available to qualifying adults
or children who are visually, physically, or learning disabled.
Cultural Diversity
Special collections for member libraries which celebrate multicultural
influences.
Homebound Services
Homebound services are provided by member libraries for qualified
people who are permanently or temporarily disabled and unable to get
to a library. Each library determines how it will provide services
based on its resources. From our catalog
you can reserve books online or by phone and arrange to have someone
you have previously designated pick up materials for you at a member
library.
Literacy
Support for English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education
(ABE) literacy programs in the four counties is offered.
Older Adults
Large print materials, books-on-tape, deposit book collections and
Bi-folkal and Visiting Kits for member libraries, nursing homes, adult
homes, and senior centers are available.
Unemployed
Classes for learning computer skills are offered regularly at the
Schenectady County Public Library. Call 388-4431 for more information.
