>Graphic Novels for Grade School Kids

From Sue:
Summer’s coming and what better time to invest in timely reading materials (read: comics/graphic novels) for the kids (read: boys especially) in your lives (I mean libraries)!

I had a question yesterday about good graphic novels especially for those boys in grades 2-3.

The Graphic Classroom Blog has great lists and descriptions especially appropriate for the grade school classroom, which means it’ll be good for your libraries too. The list is from 2008, so read on for newer titles!

The SLJ blog Good Comics for Kids lists up to date information on all sorts of comics for kids – sign up for the rss feed here too! I am.

And of course, Ingram lists top picks for 2008 and BWI has 279 titles posted. Many of these comics are ageless, get new copies and kids will just start reading them over again. The new Jellaby just came out and I’m sure that kids will want to return to the first one, just as they will with Bone which just put out the final volume nine. Amulet, Book 2 should be out soon too, so be sure to get new copies of book one.

Of course it’s spring, almost summer, 2009! Where to look for reviews of the new stuff? Here’s a review blog from the horse’s, I mean 8 year old boy’s mouth, courtesy of parent – take a look at this one when you’re in need of fresh comics. And don’t forget about PW – (we should have taken a road trip to the Kids Comic Con last month in the Bronx), SLJ, Booklist, Voya – they all have graphic novel reviews too! And let me know when your new comics and graphic novels arrive, Tim and I will be over!
