Libraries are continually seeking ways to eliminate barriers to information access for all patrons, including those with disabilities. According to the U.S. Census Bureau Survey report: Americans with Disabilities: 2010, an estimated 19% of prospective patrons have or will develop a disability.
Therefore, it is crucial for libraries to ensure that people with various disabilities have access to physical and virtual library spaces.
Equal access to information for people with disabilities means they can more actively participate in many aspects of life: education, employment, government, commerce, health care, recreation, etc.
Come to this workshop to find out what libraries can do to facilitate information access for those with either permanent or temporary disabilities. Attendees will become familiar with legal and moral obligations related to accessibility, barriers that impact accessing information, best practices for accessibility in regards to library services, and proactive measures you can take to ensure equal access to information.
