Job Posting – Librarian II, Bethlehem Public Library

Bethlehem Public Library (Delmar, NY) is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative team leader, Librarian II, to join our Public Services team.

The Librarian II will be expected to exercise an innovative approach to connecting with the community, engaging, developing and expanding audiences for library services.  The Librarian II will foster a workplace culture of trust, collaboration and growth, leading by example, motivating, providing guidance and support to staff.  The Librarian II will encourage creativity, innovation and forward thinking.  The Librarian II will assess and improve operational effectiveness to ensure we are meeting our strategic priorities.  The ideal candidate should be comfortable with embracing change in order to explore and develop improved programs and services.  Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills are necessary.  This position is classified by Albany County Civil Service; job specification below.

Special Requirement:  Eligibility for Librarian II permanent appointment by Albany County Civil Service.  Applicants may be eligible for permanent appointment if they have a current or previous permanent civil service appointment to a Librarian II or higher in New York State, or if their names appear on the current Albany County Civil Service Librarian II list of eligibles.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve responsibility for coordinating, administering and policy implementation of a major functional area of the Library, such as adult reference, circulation, youth services, technical services or audio-visual services.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director.  Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate professional, paraprofessional, clerical and volunteer personnel.  This title differs from Librarian III based on the circulation of facility.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services to library users and instructs public in proper use of library resources;
  • Compiles bibliographies;
  • Performs on-line searches of computer databases;
  • Supervises and may perform original cataloging and classification of library materials;
  • Supervises the work of professional and non-professional staff;
  • Recommends, plans and implements new or improved services;
  • Performs difficult and involved informational and referral services;
  • Performs varied and/or specialized professional library work with collection, including acquisition, evaluation and selection;
  • Initiates, develops and conducts programs, tours, book talks, story times and other public programs;
  • Serves as a liaison with community groups and/or other libraries;
  • Prepares a variety of reports;
  • Keeps and maintains records;
  • Arranges special library theme displays;
  • May be responsible for budget preparation and expenditures and revenue tracking;
  • Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses, and reading professional materials.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science;
  • Good knowledge of modern library policies, procedures, organization and services;
  • Good knowledge of bibliographical tools and services;
  • Good knowledge of database systems;
  • Skill in the performance of technical library tasks;
  • Ability to get along with others;
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to comprehend users’ needs quickly and accurately;
  • Ability to perform close detailed work;
  • Ability to lift objects such as books, supplies, files;
  • Ability to prepare a variety of reports and records;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a graduate Library Degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association and two (2) years of professional library experience.

NOTE:

  1. Qualifying professional work experience is defined as work of a professional nature performed in a library setting after completion of the MLS degree.
  2. Paraprofessional or clerical library titles such as Library Assistant, Librarian Trainee, Library Clerk, Senior Library Clerk or Library Technician are not considered professional experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a current New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate from the New York State Education Department.  Public librarian professional certificates issued as of January 1, 2010, and thereafter shall only remain valid when 60 hours of professional development are completed every five year period. Such periods will be defined as every five years from the initial certificate date [NYCRR Title 8 – Education, Section 90.7 (c)].  Incumbent must maintain certification throughout employment.

Schedule:  Monday through Friday 9am-5pm daily with one 1-9pm shift; every 5th weekend

Starting salary:  $60,004
