We communicate verbally and in writing with our patrons constantly—on our websites, social media, promotional materials, signage, in one-on-one conversations, during programs and classes, and more. It is all too easy for library jargon—so ingrained in our everyday language—to slip into those communications.
These words and phrases are so common to us, but not to many of our patrons, and using these terms can create real barriers to using libraries. Join this interactive session to explore some real-world examples of common library jargon in everyday communication, learn how to scour your communications for jargon, and consider plain-language alternatives to these terms and phrases, thus making your library more accessible.
Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to recognize library jargon and come up with plain-language alternatives to make their libraries more accessible.
- Participants will be able to formulate a plan to examine their library’s signage, policies, and online communications for library jargon.
