Clinton Liberal Institute, Fort Plain, NY

Clinton Liberal Inst.

The Clinton Liberal Institute, or the C.L.I., used to hold a co-ed prep school. Then it was changed to a military school. Students from all over the world came to the C.L.I. Simon Lake, one of the students, invented the first modern submarine. The C. L. I. Armory was used to store artillery equipment. It burned on March 25, 1900. Some people believe that part of its foundation is part of the Fort Plain High School. The building in our picture clue is all that remains of this once handsome structure.
